From June 2–4, the General Assembly of the European Landowners’ Organization (ELO) and the Forum for the Future of Agriculture are taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark. The events focus on pressing issues related to Europe’s green future, sustainability, agriculture, and forestry.
Lithuania is represented by Dr. Arūnas Svitojus, President of the Lithuanian Chamber of Agriculture, Dr. Algis Gaižutis, Head of the Lithuanian Forest and Land Owners Association, Živilė Navardauskė, the Association’s Head of Administration, and Eglė Markevičiūtė, Head of the Lithuanian Family Farmers Union. All are actively engaged in discussions about the role of landowners in building a sustainable Europe, political priorities, and the implementation of the European Green Deal in agriculture.
In the morning session, participants were welcomed by ELO President Thierry de l’Escaille, who emphasized the organization’s commitment to sustainable development in agriculture and forestry. The session continued with a review of ELO’s main strategic directions and policy priorities. The 2024 activity report, ongoing projects, and financial performance were presented. The financial report was delivered by ELO Treasurer Niels Trecow, while the activity overview was provided by Executive Director Thierry de l’Escaille and Secretary General Jurgen Tack.
An important address was given by Jeppe Bruus, Denmark’s Minister for Green Transition, who highlighted Denmark’s preparations for the upcoming EU Council Presidency and key national issues in land and forest policy. ELO’s communication strategy and key messages for meetings with ministerial delegations were also discussed.
The Forum for the Future of Agriculture, held in parallel with the General Assembly, this time focused on regional issues in Northern Europe, particularly Denmark. The event is part of ELO’s year-round initiative to organize regional conferences and online events across Europe, addressing agriculture, environmental protection, biodiversity, and climate change at the national level.
Dr. Arūnas Svitojus emphasized that such forums offer an excellent opportunity for Lithuania to actively participate in shaping EU agricultural policy and reinforcing the principles of social dialogue. “It’s not enough to react to decisions—we must help shape them together with our European partners. Our voice must be heard when it comes to the future of agriculture and forestry across Europe,” noted Dr. Svitojus.
The ELO General Assembly and Forum for the Future of Agriculture in Copenhagen continue, with their discussions and outcomes set to play a significant role in the future agenda of European agricultural policy.
